It wasn't until the 1970's where wood started to be used; however, there was still a lot of metal tubing involved. Safety standards of parks have increased since those days and to reflect that, so has the equipment.
Health and safety issues meant that playground equipment manufacturers had to develop a safer way to manufacture playground equipment. As a result of this, modern playgrounds have very little metal involved, and are usually made of plastic components with safety bars and enclosures. Modern playgrounds and other modern kiddie rides are built for the safety of the children using them, which in today's society is a huge issue that needed to be addressed.
